These two short companion works—Entratas Nos. 1 and 2—may be performed separately or as a pair. True to their title, the Entratas are fanfares: calls to attention intended to open a concert (or the second half), and they were written specifically to showcase Mr. Stoltzman’s virtuoso gifts. The composer noted that, unlike most of his works, these pieces were conceived for “lay audiences”—a perhaps inadvertent reminder of the polarities that still shape classical music today. Though not written in an explicitly jazz-oriented idiom, both Entratas “flirt with jazz… and with the audience.”
